Hammer Time

The time to buy into Hunter "The Polish Hammer" Markovich, is right now.

He's dominating the heavyweight competition and he's not even a heavyweight, yet.

Safe to say that it's been a long time since anyone has burst on to the Appalachian boxing scene quite like Hunter Markovich has done. In a short period of time he has proven that physically he is just too much to deal with. At 6'7" and a long fluid athletic frame, he has been head and shoulders above the competition, literally. The 22 year-old walks around close to 200lbs making him a natural cruiserweight. Markovich has been making a name for himself by beating up on the much bigger heavyweights. His Boxrec sports a perfect 6-0 in semi-pro one minute round competition. On October 7, as one of eight fighters in this year's King of the Mountain State Heavyweight Tournament, Markovich gets a chance to prove in the longer rounds and with better competition that he has the endurance and boxing skills to move his career forward. Once again, he will be giving up a lot of weight to most of his opponents. So far, that hasn't been a problem.

Heavyweight can wait.

The KOTMS might be the last time you see Hunter at heavyweight, well at least for a while. As a cruiserweight preparing for a professional career his height and reach present so many problems for the competition. I would look for Markovich to become a dominant cruiserweight as he finishes out his amateur days and well into the early stages of his professional career. We at Chill Boxing are predicting that later in Markovich's professional career he will be collecting big heavyweight belts, which come along with big heavyweight checks. Taking a look at the size of the men in Markovich's family, he is eventually going to be big heavyweight. His father Michael is a big strong man, and his grandfather was even bigger than his dad. At only 22, The Polish Hammer is only going to continue to grow both physically and as a boxer.

Biggest challenge yet.

It is true that Hunter will be somewhat in uncharted territory with the longer rounds in the KOMTS. He will also be facing some of the best competition he has went up against. His only blemish was to Deric Gibson who weighed in at about 250lbs and can really box. The Polish Hammer's first round draw in the KOTMS is a guy very similar to Gibson in Eric Oden II. This matchup will again put Hunter as the smaller and maybe less experienced guy in the ring that night. Fortunately for the Polish Hammer, that hasn't been a problem so far.
