Today in Sports History: Eric Dickerson Becomes the Fastest to Reach 10,000 Yards

On September 10, 1989, Eric Dickerson, one of the most iconic running backs in NFL history, added another achievement to his stellar career. In a game against the San Francisco 49ers, Dickerson rushed for 106 yards, becoming the fastest player to reach 10,000 career rushing yards, doing so in just 91 games.

At the time, Dickerson was in his second season with the Indianapolis Colts, after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Rams. His 106-yard performance against a 49ers team that boasted one of the league’s top defenses was a testament to his consistency and power as a runner. San Francisco, on their way to winning the Super Bowl that season, couldn't contain Dickerson, who had an innate ability to find holes and break off big runs.

Dickerson's path to this historic milestone was remarkable. Drafted second overall by the Rams in 1983, he made an immediate impact, rushing for 1,808 yards in his rookie season, a record that still stands. The following year, in 1984, Dickerson set the NFL single-season rushing record with 2,105 yards, a mark that has yet to be surpassed.

By the time he faced the 49ers in 1989, Dickerson had already proven himself as a Hall of Fame-caliber player. What made this feat even more impressive was the context. Reaching 10,000 yards in just 91 games shattered the previous record held by legendary running back O.J. Simpson, who had done so in 98 games.

Dickerson’s unique running style, a mix of upright grace and explosive speed, allowed him to dominate defenses with ease. He could run over linebackers or outrun safeties, making him one of the most feared offensive players of his era. His performance against San Francisco was yet another chapter in his storied career.

By the end of the 1989 season, Dickerson had solidified his place as one of the all-time greats, finishing the year with 1,311 rushing yards. He eventually retired with 13,259 career rushing yards, ranking him among the top in NFL history.

This moment in 1989 not only highlighted Dickerson’s individual brilliance but also underscored his place in the annals of football history as one of the most dominant running backs the game has ever seen.
